Small Garden Edging – Ideas On It
Most apartment dwellers are under the impression that small garden edging is somehow unattractive or unappealing. This could not be further from the truth. Landscaping small gardens is not difficult, requires very little work and is great fun. There are several apartment gardening ideas that can be used to create a beautiful, unique garden.
Planting a flower bed is an integral part of apartment gardening. If you only have a small garden, such as a pot, then it would be advisable to use large rocks as garden edging, because there might not be much room to place them around the space. For small, flower-bed gardens, small metal or plastic edging or a simple brick border would be the best choice. This works equally well at the front or back of a house and is also the best lawn edge for a patio garden.
For those with more space to play with, there are several other interesting ideas. One great option is to plant shrubs, such as marigolds or creeping thyme, along the lawn edge, or along a fence. Not only is this a very unique touch but is also a great way to add a few interesting features such as mulch underneath, which is helpful in keeping grassy areas well-manicured and neat-looking. Another good idea is to plant taller plants, such as oaks or red maples, at either side of a fence, if you don’t have a lot of ground space. Alternately, plant tall flowering bushes, such as boxwood, on the lawn edge.
It is advisable to keep in mind that the best lawn edging ideas involve finding ways to keep grass-free and tidy. This means not only mowing at the edges, but also racking and trimming away any overhanging, unhealthy, diseased or low growing plants. It also means avoiding fertilizers and other chemicals to avoid damage to the soil, which can be especially detrimental to newly-rooted perennials. This can often mean resorting to herbicides, but with organic gardens, there is less risk of chemicals harming the garden itself.
There are several ways to add a beautiful edge to your lawn. One of the easiest is using post caps or rock caps. These give the best contrast between the green of grass and the blue of the soil and are very easy to install. There are many different types of material from which to choose; metal, clay, wooden, plastic, etc. To achieve the best effect, choose edging that blends well with the soil and plants. If the edging is too close to the grass edge or protrudes over the grass verge, this will not only look unappealing, but it may actually damage the plants that you want to show off!
Small garden design ideas also include small brick edging. Brick gives a nice contrast to the green, but is a great choice for lawn edging because it is strong enough to hold on to, while also being pretty hard-wearing and long-lasting. Brick comes in a variety of different colors, so it can complement your overall garden design perfectly. One of the downsides to using brick as a garden edge is that if you want to give your plants a bit of a break from the brick, you’ll need to plant something else to get a contrast, such as an ornamental flower or vegetable.
For larger areas, you could use decorative stone bricks, which look particularly good in areas where there is a natural border, such as a garden wall or a border along a driveway. However, before you start using decorative stones, you need to prepare the area first, as you do with any other edging project. First, dig out an area about half a meter deep and half a meter wide, leaving a three-foot wide and six-foot long border. After this has been done, line it up against the sides of the grass and add concrete or small stones to create a sturdy base for your edging. Fill in around the perimeter of the stones with a thin layer of soil, and make sure the bricks are dug deep enough to be able to hold on to them. Once you have done that, cover up the entire area with some more soil and let it set for about a month, then remove it.
If you want to save money by creating a lawn edging without spending a lot of time and money, there are several small garden design ideas that won’t cost you much. A fence, for instance, is something that most people do with their own lawns, but you can save even more money by doing this on your own, with just a few tools and materials. You could also choose to line a new border with plants or other items that complement your garden rather than blocking it, and then use that as a starting point for your own edgings.
