Ideas For Small Walled Garden
When you live in a small walled courtyard or apartment, there are limited space options to consider. If you have ever tried to grow anything in even a small amount of space it can be a trying experience. You can’t plant anything against a wall or go down any of the narrow pathways in and around the house. There simply is not enough room. If you do happen to have a walled courtyard or apartment garden then here are some apartment gardening small walled gardening tips to help you enjoy your little piece of heaven.
The first small walled garden idea I will share has to do with containers. You can use containers on your wall or in a small walled courtyard to help contain your plantings while providing an area for edgings. The most common containers are Terra cotta pots, but I know many people who use other types of containers as well, like stone bowls, tubs or even large baskets filled with succulents or herbs. If you don’t have a large container you can even use fruit or vegetable jars for this purpose.
Another option for growing plants in small containers is to use planters that hang from the wall. You can find all different types of hanging planter pots at garden stores or online. These planter pots are great because they allow you to move them around and reposition them based on where the sun is during different parts of the day. This is very convenient if you need to move your plants around throughout the day or move your pots to different areas of the wall.
Another idea for small walled courtyard vegetable gardens is to make small planters filled with a variety of vegetables. I like using containers with lids because I can remove the dirt and plant a new plant without disturbing the one I’ve already planted. Plant vegetables like peas, onions, cucumbers and green beans in wide, shallow containers. You can have them in one long planter or put them in different groups based on what look best in your garden area.
Some small walled courtyards can become a vegetable garden too. One idea is to use trellises to frame up the back wall and have some taller plants on each side. This will give an illusion of more square footage and allow the smaller plants to get more sunlight. There are several different trellises to choose from, but I like to use ones that are made of wood. These also frame the back wall and give the illusion of more square footage.
Small walled courtyards also lend themselves to vases and planters. I find that large plants don’t like being crowded into a small area, so placing a vase with lots of greenery on each side will help them to grow naturally. A container garden is a great option for growing small plants too. Place some perennials in a larger pot, such as a saucer or small pot with a hole in the bottom for plant roots to go through. Other options include hanging baskets filled with pebbles, hanging baskets with a hanging bed of greenery, and planting small seeds in an urn.
Other good options for a courtyard are large pots filled with flowers, perennials, and small flowering plants such as sunflowers, marigolds, lavender, honeysuckle, daffodils, and even some evergreens. Be sure not to over-water these plants because they may wilt. Place pots at regular intervals so that the plants receive enough water to grow.
Finally, you can create an interesting feature by hanging metal or wooden beams on both sides of the walled area. These can be covered with an arch, which adds height and makes the wall look more decorative. You can also install small spiral staircases or mini-lifts to access the gardens from either side. These small walled garden features add a touch of whimsy to a small area that will be enjoyed throughout the entire year.
