How Much Sun Does Your Vegetable Garden Gets?

Ask most gardeners and they will say “no” to your question, “can my vegetable garden get too much sun?”. They will tell you that the only time it is okay to plant vegetables in the shade is during a few hours of the day when the temperatures are a few degrees below the heat index. They may tell you that if you have an older home and you have built a brick fireplace on the southern side of the house, it is okay to plant your veggies right there. These gardeners are correct on one aspect of their argument, but they are not the only ones with that opinion.

The fact is that the average garden cannot be planted in any area of the yard that gets more than 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. If you try to plant any garden in that area, you will find that it will either die or become damaged very quickly. Sunlight is the most important element in the life of all plants, even those grown for edible vegetables! It is the light source that allows the photosynthesis process to occur. Without sunlight, no vegetable garden can grow!

When we discuss vegetables, we usually mean tomatoes, peppers, squash, and onions. All of these vegetables need sunlight in order to produce healthy fruits and vegetables. The type of garden you have will determine how much you can plant in any given location. A container garden will usually need more sun than a traditional garden.

Of course, there are some plants that do better in the shade than other plants. A good example of this is lettuce. Sure, you might be able to get too much sun with this type of garden, but most people end up keeping a limited number of lettuce plants because they don’t like having them compete with so many other plants in the garden. If you have a limited amount of space and can’t grow as many vegetables, then maybe it would be best to stick with more traditional vegetables that can get the sun they need.

One thing that can limit the amount of sunlight your garden gets is when you’re planting in the shade. You can help the amount of sunlight your garden gets by planting early in the morning or late in the afternoon. This can greatly increase the amount of time your vegetables stay outdoors without being burned.

Another concern people have is when to planting certain vegetables. Some people prefer to plant their vegetables during the hot summer months. Others want to get them out of the shade as early as possible in the growing season. The key to answering the question, “When should I plant my garden?” really comes down to personal preference and what works best for your garden.

The other key consideration is harvesting. When do you want to get your vegetables out of your garden? In order to answer this question, you need to think about how much time you’re going to be able to spend harvesting. It would be best to harvest all of your plants at the same time of the growing season. Sometimes, it may be better to harvest in the fall so that you’ll have them fresh on the market longer. However, it isn’t always practical to do this.

If you’re planting late in the growing season, you need to consider your garden’s storage capabilities. Sometimes, it’s best to just leave your vegetables in your garden rather than have them go through the process of being stored. If you can’t completely pull your plants out of your garden in the fall, you can store them in the ground in the spring and let them get as warm and dry as they can get. Just make sure that your plants have plenty of room to grow.
