Extra Large Glass Bowl Terariums
So you have decided to buy yourself an extra large glass bowl for your terrarium. By all means go for it, but you should consider your terrarium design first. The shape and size of the glass bowl will depend on what type of fish you want to house in your aquarium, and the conditions that the terrarium will be subjected to. Many terrariums are made specifically for amphibians and insects, so a terrarium with a wide variety of plants is not a good idea. But a bowl that fits all kinds of terrariums can be a nice addition to any tank, provided the proper terrarium plants are chosen.
Many terrarium owners choose to keep their terrarium plants relatively small, so they don’t take up too much space. But some larger terrarium plants can get quite messy, as they tend to get trodden into the substrate by fish or eaten by fishes. For this reason, some large plants are kept in pots with removable bottoms. Just check with the owner of the pet store where you bought your plant, and they should be able to help.
Many people decide to use a bowl that has a lot of room for water. This is fine if you are going to provide both fish and a few plants. But if you are only going to provide one or two aquatic animals, then a bowl with limited and shallow depth of water might do the trick. On the other hand, if you are going to provide a small amount of animals, then a bowl with deep water is probably a better choice. It gives them easy access to the water surface, and they can splash water around to clean their surfaces.
Some people also choose terrarium plants like Java Moss for their terrariums. This kind of moss grows quite well in damp conditions. Its root system enables it to adapt to these conditions. So you can grow Java Moss in a terrarium, even when there are no plants in place. It’s part of the family of plants called rhizomes.
Some other plants that can be used are rockwool, fake tropical pines, live oaks, and a wide variety of grasses. The biggest problem with terrarium plants is getting them to grow properly in a relatively small space. Most will do fine in a 10 gallon size. However, the trick is to make sure that the container is well ventilated. Plants like Java Moss and Java Fern can do well in a wider terrarium, but they need to have plenty of direct sunlight.
If you are using extra large containers, there are some tricks to help you get the most out of them. First, plant flowers in the back. This helps give them something to hold onto while they grow. And on top of that, you can use water sprayer sprays to mist the plant frequently. This will also keep the roots cool, which is important.
For plants that do not like direct sunlight, you might consider buying a fluorescent plant or using colored lights to create an artificial sunlight environment for your extra large glass bowl plants. To really give your plant a boost, add a plant or two of Java Fern. You will find that this combination is very attractive and adds very nice accent colors to your tank. The more things you have to focus on, the better care your plants will take.
Glass terrariums can be fun to build. They can also be expensive to purchase. The trick is to shop around and look at all the different terrarium options. Once you have selected a glass bowl terrarium, remember to give it a little bit of TLC now and then. Water is one of the most important things to upkeep for these types of terrariums. Make sure they get plenty of it, as they will need it to survive.
