Caring For Mint in Containers

Mint roots are the smaller perennial herb plants that you might see growing in your flower garden. They make a nice companion plant for your flower garden. Mint grows best in full sun but will do equally well with partial shade or in a container. The best way to grow mint roots is to start them in a shallow drainage hole cut about 2 feet below ground level and about a foot wide.

Just as you plant any other plant, you must dig a hole, about half the root length and wide, and then bury the plant in the dirt. Once the roots are in the ground, you just have to continue adding new earth to fill in around the roots. Harvest the mint leaves at the end of the growing season. Harvest the stems at the beginning of the next season.

Mint grows best when planted in loose soil that drains well. You can easily do this by digging a hole in the garden that is about twice the root width and two times the root length. Then place the pot in the hole, spreading it out with your fingers, to allow air to get to all of the roots. If needed, add soil or compost to help compact the soil. You can also use a piece of wood to support the weight of the pot as you tend to the plant.

You can water mint plants deeply every few days but avoid getting the soil too wet. In the winter, it is a good idea to water the plants thoroughly but avoid getting the soil too wet. In the spring, allow the soil to drain before watering the plants again. You can also use a sprinkler system to keep the soil moist.

To protect your plants from too much sun, you can use a fabric planter bag. Mint planters bags come in many different sizes and materials. The fabric acts like a sponge as it allows the air to go through it, keeping the soil damp. Another great thing about these fabric planter bags is that they prevent your mint plants from getting too hot or too cold. They are made of fabrics that are able to filter out UV rays so that your plants will always stay nice and cool. To use the fabric planter bag, you simply need to cut it in the shape of a cone and place it in the area that you want to put your plant in.

To protect your new mint plant from being eaten by animals or people, wrap it in a piece of burlap. You can use any type of burlap you like, just make sure that it is strong enough to hold the weight of the plant. The burlap will prevent animals from eating the roots of the plant. Place the burlap over the leaflet and inside the pot and tie a string around the handle of the pot. Once this string is tied, the animal cannot pull the burlap down off of the plant.

Many people think that herb gardens are limited to only cooking herbs but there are many other uses for herbs in the garden. Herbs can be used in the form of tea, ground up into an herbal supplement or even mixed into water to make a delicious pot of herbal tea. Herbs are also excellent for cooking because they add a wonderful flavor to your food. There are plenty of books available on how to grow and care for herbs so finding a book on herbs that has everything you need to get started is very beneficial.

When growing mint in containers, it is important that you keep the soil moist. The best way to do this is to add a shallow dish of water to the top of every pot. When the water dries out, it will form a sponge. This sponge will help the plant to absorb the moisture in the soil and keep it moist. It is very important not to cover the container with any plastic bag as the roots will eventually be eaten by the bag.
